CopperSpice Experiments – Pt 12

Let’s be honest. If you are a long time Ubuntu/Mint/YABU user you want a Debian package that fully installs. When it is a text editor you want to be able to select it as the default editor for various source files.

No default application for C++ source
Diamond available as default application

You want to be able to add it to the “favorites” list so you can use it all of the time.

Editing file after install notice icon in list

Well, you can do pretty much all of that with the Debains I’ve created scripts to create. Just in case it wasn’t clear before you need to use the Software Installer, not dpkg from the command line. That way you get all of your dependencies installed.

Right click to see Software Install on menu
Install screen will eventually appear
There will be multiple installs here depending on how many dependencies you need

This is nowhere near perfect. I have been using it to make most of the modifications to Diamond source once I got the EDT keypad functionality working.

I discovered one bug testing tonight. If you right click on a file and select open with Diamond you can see this:

Single file error

The “work around” for now is to have closed Diamond with one file still open. I have not had a chance to look at this. There is simply too much going on in the MainWindow constructor and too much of it is sequence/timing dependent. It’s definitely on my list of things to look at because this is something I do a lot. The second work around is to simply open Diamond then have it open the file.

Roland Hughes started his IT career in the early 1980s. He quickly became a consultant and president of Logikal Solutions, a software consulting firm specializing in OpenVMS application and C++/Qt touchscreen/embedded Linux development. Early in his career he became involved in what is now called cross platform development. Given the dearth of useful books on the subject he ventured into the world of professional author in 1995 writing the first of the "Zinc It!" book series for John Gordon Burke Publisher, Inc.

A decade later he released a massive (nearly 800 pages) tome "The Minimum You Need to Know to Be an OpenVMS Application Developer" which tried to encapsulate the essential skills gained over what was nearly a 20 year career at that point. From there "The Minimum You Need to Know" book series was born.

Three years later he wrote his first novel "Infinite Exposure" which got much notice from people involved in the banking and financial security worlds. Some of the attacks predicted in that book have since come to pass. While it was not originally intended to be a trilogy, it became the first book of "The Earth That Was" trilogy:
Infinite Exposure
Lesedi - The Greatest Lie Ever Told
John Smith - Last Known Survivor of the Microsoft Wars

When he is not consulting Roland Hughes posts about technology and sometimes politics on his blog. He also has regularly scheduled Sunday posts appearing on the Interesting Authors blog.
